Curettage

Removal of a benign lesion, with the tissue sent for analysis.

Curettage

Overview

Under local anaesthetic the lesion is removed with a curette and the base is sealed. Where there is any question about what the lesion is, the tissue is sent for histology so you get a definite answer rather than an opinion.

What it does

  • Tissue sent for histology so the diagnosis is certain
  • Local anaesthetic — the procedure itself is painless
  • Usually heals without stitches
  • Carried out by a doctor, not delegated

Best for

Raised benign lesions, seborrhoeic keratoses and warts that have not responded to other treatment.

After your appointment

  • Keep the wound dry and dressed for 48 hours
  • Healing takes 2–3 weeks and leaves a small pale mark
  • SPF 50 on the site for 3 months
